Cover Story · N° 027 · 14 April 2026

A photograph is a moment. A Box is a whole body of work.

On BoxArte, photographers publish their work in Boxes — curated sets of images built around a place, a period, an idea. Readers can browse a Box freely, follow its maker, and acquire any single print or the entire series. One platform, thousands of Boxes, a new issue fortnightly.

The Core Idea

What isa Box?

A Box is how work lives on BoxArte. Instead of uploading loose images into a feed, photographers gather them into a set — a trip, a series, a season, a decade — and publish the whole thing as a single Box. Readers browse it as a sequence. Collectors acquire it as an edition. Editors feature it in the issue.

i.

A Box holds a body of work.

Anywhere from 8 to 120 images, sequenced by the photographer. A Box is not a folder — it is a statement. Loose images live elsewhere; Boxes live here.

ii.

Every Box is free to read.

Anyone can open a Box, browse it fully, read the artist's notes, share a favourite image. No paywall, no watermarks. The work is meant to be seen.

iii.

Prints are sold one at a time, or by the Box.

Collectors can acquire a single image as a limited edition, or the entire Box — signed, numbered, and shipped as a complete portfolio. Photographers keep 88% of every sale.

iv.

The best Boxes are featured in the issue.

Every fortnight our editors publish a new issue of the journal built around six Boxes they believe deserve your time. Featured Boxes reach 40,000 readers in four continents.

The quiet weight of film — and why a generation is returning to it.

There is a sound, before any image exists, that you only hear once you have committed. The shutter of a mechanical camera is the sound of a decision, and a decision — in a century that asks for none — is perhaps the most radical thing a young photographer can offer. Across ateliers in Palermo, Lagos, Porto and Osaka, a growing cohort is rejecting instant frictionless capture in favour of the patience of the negative…

§ 06 · Three intentions

What BoxArte is — and isn't.

We are not a stock agency. We are not a social network. We are a quiet place where photographers publish their work in Boxes and readers come to spend time with it.
I.

A gallery, publicly curated.

Every fortnight our editors select Boxes from four thousand photographers and place six into an issue. Nothing is algorithmic. Everything is chosen.

See current issue →
II.

A shop, transparently run.

Collectors can buy single prints or acquire a whole Box as a signed portfolio. Prints are produced on request; editions are limited; photographers keep 88% of every sale.

How it works →
III.

A magazine, slowly read.

Longform essays, interviews, technique notes, book reviews. Published fortnightly. Designed to be spent time with. Offered free, supported by the marketplace and our members.
